Can I record a clip with my mobile?

The quickest and easiest way to send a clip in is via your mobile. To make a video on your mobile you need to remember: The file size for your video clip is limited by the size of your mobile's memory. All content on your mobile (i.e. ring tones, wallpapers, photos, games, wallpapers, themes etc) must share your mobile's memory with any video clips you've created. Removing downloaded or pre–loaded mobile content will free up your mobile's memory for your video clips. Most mobiles let you set the quality of the video that you wish to record – refer to your mobile's user manual or website. Many video cameras on mobiles let you choose different settings for different light conditions (for example, sunny, cloudy, tungsten light, fluorescent light) – again, best to check your mobile's user manual or website.

How do I send a clip in as a video message from my mobile?

Make sure your mobile is set up to send MMS video messages. To test everything is working, first send your video message to a mate to check it's sending OK. If you can't send a video message, remember you can always transfer the clip from your mobile to your computer, and then send the clip from there. Check your mobile's user manual for info about how to transfer video files from your mobile.

How much does it cost to send my clip in via my mobile?

Sending your clip in via mobile will only set you back the standard cost of sending a video MMS (usually between 12p and 60p). Check your network provider for more details.

Can I record a clip with my webcam?

Most webcams can capture videos through the software that comes with the product. Most of the software also allows for editing and saving into the usual video formats. Check your user's manual or website.

Can I record a clip with my video camera?

Video captured with digital cameras can easily be transferred to a PC through a USB cable, fire wire cable, memory card or stick. The optimal settings for sound and picture quality are determined by the equipment being used and the options that the product has for better sound and picture quality. Check your user's manual or website. For best results, save in a 4:3 aspect ratio.

What is the maximum file size?

Keep your clip to 3 minutes and you shouldn't have any file size problems. For clips uploaded via the 'this is' website the maximum recommended size is 10Mb. For clips sent by MMS from your mobile, the file size may be limited by your mobile handset and mobile network. However, generally the maximum file size for a video MMS is 300k.

What file formats can I send in?

You can send in a video file that uses any of the following extensions: .avi .dv .mov .qt .mpeg .mp4 .3gp .asf .wmv.

Is there a limit to how many videos I can upload?

There is no limit to the number of videos you can upload.

What kind of videos can I submit?

You can add video on just about anything so long as it doesn't breach our moderation policy

What is Moderation?

You can upload pretty much anything you want but we will be on the lookout for the following which won't be approved:

  • Nudity or pornography
  • Drug use
  • Violence
  • Physical attacks on individuals or groups or animals
  • Copyright material
  • Racist comments or video
  • Homophobic comments or video
  • Threatening behaviour towards others in comments or video
  • Comments or video which incite hatred towards any person or groups of individuals

What happens to my video after I upload it?

Once you've upload your video, it passes through our processors which check the file for errors and convert it into a format so that it's viewable on 'this is' sites and is also able to be downloaded onto a mobile phone. Once it has been processed, the clip will appear live on the site where you can view it. This may take a short while depending on the size of your file and amount of upload traffic.

Why did my video get taken down?

You video will be taken down if it breaches our moderation policy. However, from time to time there are also technical errors that we find in video clips in which case we will suggest that you re-upload your clip. If your video is rejected or removed, you will receive an email outlining the reasons for its removal from the site.
